چکیده

It is argued that anisotropic electron pitch angle distributions in the closed magnetic field regions of the Martian ionosphere gives rise to excitation of plasma instabilities. We discuss two types of instabilities that are excited by two different populations of electrons. First, the generation of Langmuir waves by photoelectrons with energies of the order of 10 eV is investigated. It is predicted that the measured anisotropy of their pitch angle distribution at the heights z≈400 km causes excitation of waves with frequencies f∼30 kHz and wavelengths λ∼30 m. Near the terminators the instability of the electrostatic waves with frequencies of the order of or less than the electron gyrofrequency exited by thermal electrons is predicted. The typical frequencies of these waves depend on the local magnitude of the magnetic field and can achieve values f∼3−5 kHz above strong crustal magnetic fields.

Electron pitch angle distributions as indicators of magnetic field topology near Mars

[1] We have analyzed electron angular distributions recorded near Mars over a period of 7 years in order to constrain the topology of magnetic field lines near Mars. We used 63 million pitch angle distributions of 115 eV electrons measured at 400 km altitudes by the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft and classified them according to their shape. Closed magnetic field lines are associated wit...

Estimation of the total electron content of the Martian ionosphere using radar sounder surface echoes

[1] The Martian ionosphere’s local total electron content (TEC) and the neutral atmosphere scale height can be derived from radar echoes reflected from the surface of the planet. We report the global distribution of the TEC by analyzing more than 750,000 echoes of the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding (MARSIS). This is the first direct measurement of the TEC of the Mar...

In this study, waves instability in free electron laser with background plasma, under the influence of self-electric and self-magnetic fields, are analyzed. A dispersion relation in the Raman regime for free electron laser with a helical wiggler magnetic field and an axial magnetic field derived in which all possible wave modes can have unstable couplings with each other. This dispersion relati...

Generation of ELF waves during HF heating of the ionosphere at midlatitudes

Modulated high frequency radio frequency heating of the ionospheric F-region produces a local modulation of the electron temperature, and the resulting pressure gradient gives rise to a diamagnetic current. The oscillations of the diamagnetic current excite hydromagnetic waves in the ELF range that propagate away from the heated region. The generation of the waves in the 2 – 10 Hz range by a mo...

In this paper, stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and electron heating in laser plasma propagating along the plasma fusion is investigated by particle-in cell simulation. Applying an external magnetic field to plasma, production of whistler waves and electron heating associated with whistler waves in the direction perpendicular to external magnetic field was observed in this simulation. The pla...
